I carry a small sailboat on my roof rack, and I needed padding for the rails.
Today I got a couple of those pool toy "water noodles" at the local discount store, about 6 foot long, and they had a 1 inch hole down the center.
I unscrewed the side rails, slid the tubes over the rails and screwed it back together. They seem tough enough, and $1.40 each.
Best of all, they're bright orange like the rest of the car.
