a/c smokin?? 200

I have a 1987 240 with 300+ miles on it. The air was working fine
until today. Slowly it starting warming up in the car..and i smelt something
burning. I stopped and saw the belt going to the a/c smokin. Any ideas..
think the compressor is locking up? I turned the a/c off.
