Dangling Emission Control Hoses (Clarified) 120-130

Sorry about the first msg, the spacing got screwed up in transmission. Try it this way:

In Feb of this year there was an excellent discussion about how to hook up the emission hoses on the B20 verses the B18. Ron and George gave us a good rundown and Ron even provided a great diagram reference: http://www.intelab.com/swem/pcv_diagrams.htm

If I can summarize without screwing it up....it goes like this:

B18 From: Crankcase Gases Hose To: Air Cleaner Insert

B20 From: Crankcase Gases Hose To: Intake Manifold Nipple

B18 From: Flame Trap To: Intake Manifold Nipple

B20 From: Flame Trap To: Air Cleaner Insert

If you are confused by any of the terms, refer to the diagrams at the web site Ron gave us and I sited above.

My question is: To what do I hook my brake booster hose on my B20B engine?

Thanks for your help.

Dangling Emission Control Hoses (more Clarification!) 120-130

Jerry;

Sil is absolutely correct...brake booster wants to be connected to DIRECTLY to manifold vacuum. Period!

Beware. If however you were connected as the stock (carbureted) B20 diagram shows, and you connected it (for instance, by way of a "T" fitting)to the hose going to the manifold (by way of the orifice limited nipple) you would possibly not get vacuum to let the booster work correctly.

Cheers

A bit more clarification yet 120-130

That's a really good point -- but for people running the B18-style routing, a "T" fitting on the manifold side of the PCV valve is exactly equivalent to hooking the booster directly to the manifold, and that's just fine. NOT so with the B20-style routing.

If you have the aluminum, dual carb intake manifold, I would think you could screw out the plug in the front end of it and screw in a nipple to take the hose.

Dangling Emission Control Hoses (Clarified) 120-130

Bob, Phil, & Ron,

Great advice especially about not connection the brake booster to the intake manifold with a T connection. I was about to try that.

The problem that I have now is that I have only one connection to the intake manifold and need to connect both the brake booster and the hose from the oil filler cap. I don't have a plug on the end of the intake manifold. Can I simply drill a new hole and insert a nipple like the one already there? Anything special I need to be aware of?

Thanks again for the great advice.

Jerry

Jerry,
I suppose you could tap the manifold. The alternative would be to change your breather set-up as per B18. That's what I did with my B20, i.e., PCV valve on top of the oil trap, hose from there to the manifold nipple; hose from oil filler cap to insert between air filter and carb. If I understand Phil correctly, you could then use a T, which would reduce the spaghetti on top of your engine by one noodle.
