engine noise and oil light on 900

a few days ago the oil, check light on my 1994 960 came on intermittently. the car has 187,000 miles came on it
it also developed a slight tapping noise that was slight.
I then changed the motor oil,and suddenly the tapping noise got worst and the oil light came on and stayed on.
it was also noticed that there was clear water cominig out of the exhaust.
Do I need a new motor or is there a less drastic fix for the problem?

Pablos is Probably right, oil pick up o rings. mine is 92 965 with 445000 km (276500 mi). No oil light but a loud hammer from one of the valve lifters. Shop installed $20 worth of parts and $350 Labor. They said driving wouldn't hurt anything but I dont know... could get expensive. you could do the work yourself with some time and a good repair book ( no Hanes for this model Too Bad). The engine has to be raised slightly to remove the oil pan to get at the seals. The service did fix the problem . Valve lifter set installed will cost $1000. This one is shop as timing belt work is involved, Not as easy as the 4's. Good luck - great car.

Dan965 perhaps you can save me some cash.
I'm planning on replacing the lifters myself but if my oil flow is not proper because of an oring or seal I may have an easier fix. Is it the o ring on the oil pump suction pipe? I have what sounds like one noisy lifter. I have tried a professional motor flush, An old fashioned Italian tune-up and a heavier viscosity 50wt. oil. The problem is still a noisy lifter after the car is warmed up.

        wilhome..

the o ring kit that the volvo shop replaced for me required removal of the oil pan. I'm not too sure if it is the one on the pipe as it can be accessed (I think) from the oil pump cover in front of the engine. Before spending the bucks on a valve lifter replacement (and why stop there - rebuild the head) try the o ring kit replacement. also for some reason that goes against logic, lighter viscosity oils seem to work better in this engine. I have started to use 5w30 year 'round, summer highs-winter lows +30 -30 usual extremes. also must never start cold and drive less than 5 min or the next start will be ropy or not at all as the valves just wont work! As the car approches 450000km I am contemplating switching to synthetic oil. anyway ask about the o rings, Stock # 8648358. The nice guy at the parts counter may let you look at the picture in the book. Good Luck

          My original post:
          1997 S90
When you first start the car the lifters are noisy for about 3 seconds. Then they are quiet. It seems once the oil is up to temp one of the lifters is not getting enough oil flow or the pressure is not maintained. After I used a professional motor flush and filled with Castrol 20W-50 the results are still the same. Would a straight 50 weight motor oil help?

          Solution:
After trying a 50wt oil as an experiment the tapping continued, perhaps even worse. At this point I thought the only solution was to replace all 24 lifters and buy all the special tools required.
I talked to a mechanic at a dealer and followed his suggestion. I switched to a 5W-30 penzoil full synthetic and the problem is gone completly.

Thanks for the info. After checking on the price of all the service tools and fixtures needed to do the job it would be less expensive to buy the lifters and have a volvo mechanic who can actually show me that he has the right tools do the job. I may configure a mechanical oil pressire gauge and see what the pressures are at idle. Low oil pressure would definitly cause lifter noise, even though I only hear one tapping. Were all your lifters noisy or just a few??
I haven't seen any other posts on this site of problems with o-rings, only bad lifters. My wife drives this car and only makes short trips :( I live in the Texas heat which may be to my advantage.

Sounds like you have oil pick-up problem. Could be the infamous o-ring seal problem. I wouldn't drive the car until you get it fixed.

Just for crapz sake, what kind of oil filter are you using?

Water out exhaust could be normal....but in combination, well you should check:

    1) Oil analysis
    2) Mechanical oil pressure
    3) Coolant sniff for exhaust gases
    4) Leak down test
    5) Cylinder pressure (compression) test
    6) Cooling system pressure test

This will help you pin-point the problem and maybe prevent the need for a new motor.

      I'm using volvo filters.
The tapping is only one cam follower and it is very intermittent.
When the oil is not up to temp the tapping always stops after about 3 sec.
Then it may or may not return on that day.
Does it still sound like an o-ring problem??
