960 climate control issue? 900 1992

My wife's 1992 960 wagon is having problems with the climate control. It started out as a delay in the AC kicking on, we'd have to go some distance before the air would start pumping. Now its just not coming on- the blower isn't blowing, that is, at least not with any force. Leaving it on "auto" or turning the setting up makes no difference, nor does turning off the AC for only regular ventilation, nor changing the temperature guage. It does go, but very very very slowly and with insufficient force to cool the front of the car, much less my poor kids in the back.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm very happy to have been clued into this site, I've learned a lot already- including the great tid bit regarding the timing belt, one of which I've ordered already!

God bless y'all,

ef

    I have a '91 945 SE (960 car + 940 turbo motor)

MY symptom was no vent airbut blower was audibly working and compressor
    was cycling.

Fix is replacing vacuum bellows perFAQ. its under driver dash right side
king of behind radio area by driver right knee.

I removed trim panel below steering wheel / column, removed kick panel
with heater box exposed cut square 5"x5" as in FAQ. I used electric drill
with sanding attachment modified to use die grinder wheel (small) I dont
own a dremel but that may work. after the hole is done bellows is exposed.
    2 nuts and some clips.

whole job was 1.5 - 2 hours. plastic bellows is fragile so be careful. (nuts)
all my money is on this bellows

The "flapper" door vacuum motors inside the unit often develop leaks and then don't control things properly. An early symptom is no A/C when accelerating but it comes back as soon as you let up on the accelerator and the extra vacuum can overcome the motor's leak.

There is a "short cut" repair method in the FAQ area to replace the vacuum motor/s. I've got a set sitting on my work bench just waiting for me to have a weekend worth of project time as there is potentially a lot of work to replace a $30 part.

Sounds like the exact symptoms of my '94 960. The A/C is on (clutch engaged) and air is cold, but it won't blow with any force to speak of. I, too, assumed it was the climate control. Per the FAQ on this board, I suspected a bad solder joint and resoldered the connections in the ACC. Didn't help. Went to the internet and found a used replacement ACC from a Volvo salvage yard and bought it. Didn't fix my problem. Point is, don't automatically assume it's the climate control module. It's an expensive item to purchase (even used) when you don't know for sure that that's the problem.

The FAQ references resisters in the blower motor assembly that sometimes go bad. I'm wondering if maybe that's my (and possibly your) problem. I don't know where to go from here, except the mechanic. I'll be watching this thread for clues.

Indeed, the clutch is engaged and the air itself is cool there just isn't the pressure there to move it around. The fan seems to blow very mildly, more or less just enough to tease!

Thank you gentlemen, you've given me a place to start and places not to go to.

      God bless you and yours,

      ef

You do not mention what the AC compressor is doing. Is it's clutch engaging? Do the controls try to redirect the air to defrost, dash vents and bottom vents? If yes then your problem is probably isolated to the blower motor fan speed module or the fan motor itself. Does the fan blow anything at all? Test with just key on, no engine so you can hear.

If it is the speed module that is easy to change, source the part at a wrecker. Same for the motor.
