Are any aftermarket S/V90 radiators all-metal??? S90-V90

I needed to remove a radiator hose, so of course now my radiator output fitting is leaking : (

Does FCPGroton or anyone sell an all-metal radiator for the 90's???

I'm pretty sure ipd carries nothing for this car, right??

Replacement Cycle S90-V90

At 125,000 my original radiator failed on my 95 965. Our mechanic is advising replacement at 100,000 due to high failure rate. Luckily mine occurred slowly and with visible warning-puddle on paving. Cracked plastic at upper hose connection. Replaced with Nissen. Our 240s never failed.

Greetings... check out www.radiators.com
I came across them when I was searching for a radiator for my Jeep.
Their prices were really decent.
Good luck, Walt

Yes I second what others here have said. I do know that Volvo now offers an increased capacity triple-row Nissen all aluminum radiator for the 960/S/V90, which can be plagued by cooling problems if you don't religiously follow the Volvo recomended replacement of the thermostat every 2 yrs and flush the system and use Volvo coolant.
One common misconception is that an all brass radiator is superior to the Volvo aluminum radiators. That is totaly false. It is simply due to the far greater thermal conductivity of aluminum, an aluminum radiator can have three times the heat dissipation than that of a brass one, for the same area and volume of displacement of the radiator. That means brass radiator has to be six rows to equal the stock Volvo twin row aluminum radiator. When you combine this with their coolant technology, you cannot find better cooling components in an aftermarket part.
I have been fortunate with my '96 960, but heed the warnings of others and let the dealer do all the work on my car.
DIY for this car is possible, but don't cut any corners.

vvpete,

If what you're saying is true, that's great news. I have not been able to determine any info about this all-alluminum Volvo upgrade for the V/S90. It does not seem to be mentioned in the 700/900 FAQ. Do you have a part number or anything?? Thanks.

Did you ever get a part number for this Volvo triple row radiator replacement?

Thanks, DEWFPO

No, I didn't. It's a myth as far as I know. I had to replace with a alu/plastic Nissens from FCP. Sorry.

You do not want an all metal radiator in your car. You want a Volvo (Blackstone OEM) or perhaps Nissens aluminum and plastic radiator to avoid bimetallic corrosion of the engine through any voltage in the coolant, such as from bad grounds. You also want to put in new Volvo coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Replace all hoses that carry coolant (radiator, heater, reservoir and engine oil cooler) with new Volvo hoses. These last a lont time, stay soft and do not transmit engine torque or vibration to radiator or heater valve plastic parts. Change also heater valve (it is brittle by now) and coolant reservoir (corrosion of metal inserts break plastic inlet and outlet). Perhaps it is time to change the water pump also. None of this is overkill. If that engine overheats, a new one costs $11,000. Read 700/900 FAQ particularly regarding 960, S90 and V90 cars. You can get the parts from or

I replace my radiator last year. I also need to replace the heater valve.

A/C not working, new Evap time. I've take the dash apart exposing the guts. It wasn't too bad a job, except for the heat.

How does having an all-metal radiator cause bi-metalic corrosion? Maybe if the radiator was made of two different metals, but I was thinking more of an all-alluminum radiator. The OEM radiators are crap... unless they have improved the ones that are now in the supply system.

Please, read the post below from Steve Ringlee of 700/900 FAQ fame, he knows! When I asked Nick at www.fcpgroton.com whether I should buy from him an aluminum and plastic Volvo (Blackstone?) radiator for $250 or an also aluminum and plastic Nissens radiator for $150, he recommended Nissens. Still, the Volvo aluminum radiator will work better and last longer than a brass one if you know what you are doing. Consult with Nick, he consistently gives me the best service and lowest prices. Be sure to read 700/900 FAQ, particularly regarding 960, S90 and V90 cars cooling. I think most if not all of us at Brickboard who have had these cars for a while will tell it is about time to overhaul the cooling system on your car with new Volvo or OEM parts, perhaps even down to hose clamps. If you want aftermarket, you can try Breeze stainless steel clamps for silicone hoses. On this car, particularly regarding that engine, you want to be safe rather than sorry.

The only "all-metal" radiators available are brass-solder composition. Aluminum core/plastic side tanks predominate in new cars. The former will, if you have a bad ground or any electrical potential in the engine, begin a process of galvanic corrosion that has bad effects on aluminum elsewhere, including the heater core and (in this engine) the block and head.

This is a little-known but growing problem. Manufacturers have solved it in part by going to all-aluminum components.

Using a copper/brass radiator on the 240/700/900 really wasn't a problem due to the iron block and aluminum head. Now, we have to be carefull.

Thanks. This is the info I was asking for. When I said all-metal, I of course meant all aluminum.

Also put in a new OEM thermostat.
