Theoretical question. 700 1987

Theoretically (since there isn't supposed to be one on this car) what would be the effect of a clogged flame trap on an 87 760 turbo> I have something under the hood that loos an awful lot like a flame trap. Small thing in line with one big hose on the bottom and a big and small hose on top.

No flame trap on the turbo (there is a good reason why - long story which I won't bore you with unless you really want to know) - but you have everything else in the PCV circuit. The hoses and nipples can plug up, as can the breather box, just like they do on the NA cars with the flame trap. Check out the FAQ section on crancase ventilation. Lots of good info and explanation on how the PCV circuit works and what can go wrong with it. The key thing is to check the plastic "nipple" and the hoses that connect to it at least once a year. Keep everything clean and replace the hoses when they plug up. If you don't then the pressure in the crankcase will build up and blow out a crankshaft or camshaft seal, or blow out the turbo oil drain line seal. Hope this helps. I am an expert on neglecting the PCV system on my Volvo's in the past so I know first hand what problems it can cause. Not worth it for the sake of an easy half hour check-out once a year. Hope this helps.

Did you open up the holder and see if an actual FT was inside? The older ones look like a coil of tin foil and the later ones look like tiny spagetti strainers. There is also a vacuum line to the FT holder. The other guys will correct me if I'm wrong but think the turbos have the holder w/o the actual FT inside. When they plug up on non turbo engines, crankcase pressure rises and you often get oil leaks at various engine seals.

your on the money....and they do clog...complete maintenance as per the faq essential - but no actual 'trap' of course...also do the breather box...

There are the hoses for the flam trap but it does not have the screen in it.
And if they are clogged you can blow out the oil dipstick and or main seals etc.
