How to remove a 240 trailer hitch? 200

Hi Folks,

I found a really nice strudy trailer hitch on an old 240 at the junk yard and I'm having trouble removing it. There are two bolts on the bumper near the ball hitch that I removed. Then when opening up the trunk I removed two large bronze looking bolts. It appears that there are still four smaller bolts/nuts holding the hitch to the underside of the frame. Any suggestions on how to get this thing removed fromt he vehicle?

re: "...There are two bolts on the bumper near the ball hitch that I removed...."
If I'm reading your phrase as you meant it to be read, then I'm afraid that it doesn't sound like a Volvo-brand hitch -- it sounds like some cheap knockoff. None of the Volvo brand hitches ever had (nor should any reputable hitch maker have) bolts attaching the hitch to the bumper. The bumper is not meant to support, even partly, the load of up to the 3,300 lbs that the car can tow.
All of the Volvo hitches were solely attached, at the sides [never in the middle "near the ball hitch" as you wrote] on the longitudinal "quasi-frame" (since it's a unibody :-) rails adjacent to the spare tire wells in the rear fenders. The ends of the hitch had a plate, [if I recall correctly] held usually by one or two modest bolts in the frame rail plus one additional vertical, massive bolt through the forward end of the bumper "shock" (inside the frame) running from inside the trunk to the underside of the frame.
Unfortunately, I've seen quite a few (what I'll call "K-Mart no-brand" hitches) that bolt to the bumper to provide some support to an otherwise flimsy frame.
If that hitch is as I think (and described), rather than a Volvo hitch, I'd recommend using it only for the very lightest loads. Be careful.
And please pardon me if I misinterpreted your description.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your response. Yes, there are two bolts that run up through the bottom of the bumper near the ball hitch, then there are two heavy steel supports that are bolted on each side of the frame underneath the trunk/cargo area. I removed the two "massive" brass-like bolts from inside the trunk/cargo hatch and it appears that there are at least two more bolts underneath on the frame that I need to break loose. I wasn't sure of the brand, but I think it might have been a Rembo hitch. But you're right, I didn't see Volvo stamped anywhere on it. I sprayed the bolts with PBlaster and I'll head back to try to bust them loose this coming weekend.

I suspected on first reading your post as, that the hitch being bolted to the bumper, wasn't a Volvo hitch. But I haven't seen newer (post 80) hitches.

However, if you've got the two vertical bolts (24mm heads?)that go through the frame and are accessed through the trunk/cargo lid and that also hold the bumper "shocks", (run on sentence), and have two additional smaller bolts on each side, then it should fit without needing to make holes in the bumper.

Yes, for sure you will have to remove them with a 1/2" drive ratchet if need be. Then look for two more that are just around the corner on the vertical part of mount section. Sometimes those are not present but they should be. When you have removed the 4-6 bolts give the hitch a good kick and watch out for falling iron.

If it's like the hitch I removed from my DL just remove those four bolts that you mentioned. Are they inaccesible for some reason?

if you are having trouble removing old bolts and you have 120 volt elec. close by try using an angle grinder with a zip blade it will cut through the steel like a hot knife thtough butter. if elec. is not available try PB blaster penetrating spray it works well espically if you can wait and spray it and let it work into the metal. good luck
