I can't find the fan relay on my 87 740 gle.
I looked all through the faq and the forum archive.
It is not on the coolant resevoir and not by the battery or under the coil.

My 1987 745T does not have a fan relay either. I do plan on adding one when I make the changes for the electric fan to run anytime the AC compressor is on. The 1988 and later cars have the fan relay.

Thanks for ending my endless search for the fan relay. I'm in michigan so a/c is not needed much, but the interior of the car does get noticably warmer when not on the highway and there are not foot vents on the 740 like on my 140 and 240. My fan is rusted completely out and i picked up a fan from a 760 the other day at the pick and pull. I figured it would help the city driving warmth and generally take some edge off the cooling system if i got an electric fan working again. I tried to install the new fan today and ran into some problems. The fan is considerably larger and has curved blades. The brackets almost match up, but when i got everything in place the hood latch comes right down and bumps into the fan blade. I'll have to lower it or find another alternative. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You bought an electric fan from a 1988 or later 760. You need a pre-1990 740 electric fan, or a pre-1988 760 electric fan.

You don't have a fan relay, at least if you're talking about an electric radiator fan. 740s prior to 1990 had a mechanically driven fan attached to the crankshaft. No relay.

He's probably talking about the electric fan on the front of the air conditioning condenser (and intercooler on Turbo cars), just behind the grille.

The FAQ mentions the relay for this fan is on the coolant reservoir, or possibly on the power steering reservoir bracket. I think there's a photo of one of John Sargent's cars' power steering reservoir bracket, with two relays clipped to it. One of the relays was for the fan, and the other was for the fuel injection ECU.

Oddly, when I looked at my own car, there was only one of these relays on the power steering reservoir bracket, so I'm not sure if it's the fan or the ECU relay. I suspect it's for the ECU. The electric fan on my 1987 car runs fine, so there must be a second relay hidden somewhere else that I haven't found. I'd be curious to hear answers to Paul's question, too.
