fan relay on 87 740 700

He's probably talking about the electric fan on the front of the air conditioning condenser (and intercooler on Turbo cars), just behind the grille.

The FAQ mentions the relay for this fan is on the coolant reservoir, or possibly on the power steering reservoir bracket. I think there's a photo of one of John Sargent's cars' power steering reservoir bracket, with two relays clipped to it. One of the relays was for the fan, and the other was for the fuel injection ECU.

Oddly, when I looked at my own car, there was only one of these relays on the power steering reservoir bracket, so I'm not sure if it's the fan or the ECU relay. I suspect it's for the ECU. The electric fan on my 1987 car runs fine, so there must be a second relay hidden somewhere else that I haven't found. I'd be curious to hear answers to Paul's question, too.
