On this alternator the slip rings are behind the rear bearing so when you take off the plastic rear cover you now have acess to the screws holding the regulator/brush assembly. I think you can generate room enough to work on it by removing the top of the air cleaner and the AMM.
I did it the hard way before I had my manuals. I actually took the alternator off the car and was surprised to find it would have been possible to replace the regulator with it on the car.
