Headlights 700

Say I was to get a 740 from the years when they had the quad headlights. Is it possible to convert to the larger style lights and matching turn signals? If not what years did 740's have each style?
Are there any prefered models among them?
How do 740's differ from 760's?
Thanks
Oliver

Thank you all for the insights. I agree (now that I think about it) on the fact that you get better illumination from 4 lights on than just 2. And those yellowed lenses aren't perty either.
Thanks

Try the european headlight assembly for 1984-1989 740's. You can get them from Europe or Canada I think. They weren't on the US cars because they were all glass and Dept. of Trans outlawed them. Same deal with early Mercedes. Try web for parts suppliers in other countries; try UK Volvo dealers.

I question whether the "single" euro light assemble for the early car is a better solution for "lighting or cost" than using the cibie or hella quad lamp system. Both the Cibie and the Hella are E-code lights. They have the e-code beam pattern, they are a metal housing/reflector, glass lens and they except any of the H-4/H-1 bulbs that are available. They are available at many US sources and they are less expensive than the single euro lamp. Personally, I feel they are better looking than the "early 7-series" single e-code light. Now the later 900 series single is a different story but it is a different light altogether.

Think about it this way, with the single E-codes, you can have 260watts maximum total light available (two lamps with 130 watt high beam, using 90/130 H-4 bulbs), where as the e-code quad lamps can have 460 watts (130 out of each Hi/Lo (90/130 H-4) and 100 out of each Hi 100 H-1)) and a greater range of lamp aiming. I usually splay the Hi/Lo lamps to the side a bit more than stock setting and then let the highs show you the distance. You can't do that with the singles. Personal opinion is expresed here, of course. Either way, make sure you upgrade your wiring using heavier gage wire and isolating relays.

For Heaven's sake, don't upgrade to the crappy USDOT big single headlight! It may look more modern but the light pattern is TERRIBLE and you can't install "over wattage" bulbs to try and compensate for the bad "pattern" without melting the plastic housing. You can get the 1989 or earlier Euro headlamp (single) or buy yourself a set of Cibie or Hella NON-SEALED beam headlamps which is a lot cheaper!!! You can run overwattage bulbs and have a good (euro-code style beam pattern which is much better (safer) to drive by.n Plus, if you re-wire (and you should!!!) using David Stern's wiring kits you can run up to 130watts of high beam on the HI/Lo lamps (90 watts low) each and 100watts on the Hi, each. That is 460 watts of high beam illumination!!! I had that on my old Datsun 510 and it was awesome!!!! Right now I have a 1991 740 and I HATE the wimpy headlights I am presently stuck with. BrickStylez have euro-headlamps listed at 156 each. I don't know if this is for the early 9quad to single conversion or the later US single to Euro single.... If we are lucky, it might be the Euro 900 single with the built-in driving and fog lamps. I like those.

if your going to replace the head lamps just get the euro kit for $345
If you were to replace them with 1990-92 740 head lamps it would cost the same
The Euro lights look much nicer.(not ricey)
