Junkyard 240 Blown Headgasket update 200 1987

Well, I just came back from the "yard", here's what I know.

It's actually an 87 although it's got the big headlights (hmmm), 166K on it.

It started and barely idled. and very rough at that. I revved it and it smoothed out and sounded strong. The dipstick revealed brown foamy goo, obviously the gasket is shot. No noticeable oil leakeage around head, but a damn dirty bay. New radiator so it looks like some one was trying, also gallon jug on the floor.

Body wise straight and relativly rust free. Broken tail lights (rev lense broken on both) and 1 turn signal broke. Tan cloth interior, a bit dirty, no tears. Needs a rear trunk lid.

Sounds like a project to me, now to sell the wife. I got pics to help.

Wish me luck. Art

" Now to sell the Wife.

I don't think that is such a good idea. If you have a wife that is tolerant of a bunch of old Volvos, I think you should keep her.

Sorry, I couldn't let that one pass without a little humor.

Dan

Robert,

Exactly. About 8 yrs ago she asked me what I was going to do on Saturday. I said I going to drive to Maysville to look an an 1800ES. She said why are you going to look a car you know nothing about. I said why not. The car is fat and happy in my garage to this day. And I know a lot more now than I did then.

Since we presently own 3 Volvos, I don't think it's a huge sell job. I've already told her about it and didn't get the big NO!!!! Just asked if our (seldom used) mechanic would do the work. I replied No, I'll do it.

So we'll see.

Oh I forgot about the wiring harness, I did this on my 87 745T, I just happened to find a recently replaced harness at the junkyard. Got that one for 25 bucks, that will never happen again.

The headlight issue pussled me because my 87 745T has the 4 headlight set up, I didn't know when they switched.

The underneath inspection is a bit hard to accomplish where it sits. It does have a newer exhaust. But all in all it looks pretty good. Also, based on the stickers in the windows I can tell where it lived to a certain extent and it lived in a nice area. Probably the college age kid got it. Also, at this yard, cars come in with temp tags and they stay on, this has none. So it didn't die on the road after just being bought (maybe).

But for $400, parts for my 245SE. What the hell.

Thats the way a lot of 240's are ending up:
no mechanical skilled previous owners will facing a $1000 - $1200 (guessing) repair bill at the volvo shop(for a (for me) "simple" job as a gasket rep)

too much worth for the owner, so he abondon his car for a few §100.

The guy at the junkyard makes it double when somebody like you wants to buy it:

Buy 2 of these and you can assemble a "brand - new" car!!

really!

The donor car will later on serve even other parts if needed.

keep looking for rust signs, the bays, the suspension sway arms,
a lot of times rust is invisible under the black rubber sprayed layer !!!!

succes with the proj

It has the 86-93 headlights (North America). Before you buy, take a look at the wire harness and look for rot under the left side rear foot well. An 87 is a lot less appealing than a '92, or whatever it was an hour ago.
