Trans swap? 700 1989

I have an '89 745 with a B234 and an AW 71. The trans is going but it wan't the one I wanted anyway. It seems I can: 1.) buy an car with a B234 and an M47, 2.) buy an M47, clutch, drive shaft, etc. and swap,(preferred) 3.) rebuild my AW71, or 4.) buy an AW71.

I love my car but I hate this transmission. please help.

Your car if equipped with a B234F should NOT have a AW71, but a AW72L. the AW72L has gearing more suited to the 16v engine...

What makes you think the trans is going? have you tried a fluid change/flush?

Trans swap? 700 1989

Cliff, your right, it is an AW72. What happened was, the trans would sometimes not shift up to fourth, presumably because of the OD dis-engage function, the warning light is always on in varying brigtness. But then I tried driving it and I couldn't get it to shift into third. I took it to an AAMCO and mad sure the guy had worked on this model before. He said it needs a rebuild. So I thought this would be a good time to park it for a bit and see if I can squeze a five speed (M47 right?) onder it. I've read the article on converting to M46 in the FAQ section of this site and I'm confident I can perform all the steps. I'm just having a hard time finding specifc info and specifications.

Thanks,
Aubrey
