groaning brick 200 1982

I'm in the process of troubleshooting a hesitancy problem in my 82 240 LH Jetronic (Chrysler ignition), and yes it has an air mass meter. I have a new ignition module (haven't yet installed sleeves on the pins at the plug connecting the wiring harness to the module), new distributor cap/rotor, good plug wires, no evidence of wire harness rot. I've swapped coils with a good-running engine.

I still have hesitation at various times. It occasionally cuts out at idle, but more significantly will cough intermittently at road speed. This seems to happen most commonly at steady speed or under slight load.

As I'm running through the gears, there is a groan (sounds like when a brake caliper seizes a piston against a disk) originating at the rear of the car. This happens just after shifting and lasts a few seconds during the early to mid-portion of each gear. In other words, it begins to groan just after I shift (while under load) then fades out, only to repeat the cycle with the next gear.

The car is running fine at these times, but I was wondering if this is the type of noise the main fuel pump makes if the auxiliary pump is failing?

Other suggestions for diagnosis (groan and cutting out)?

Phillip

The fuel pump sounds like it is sucking air when the In-tank pump is not working. (kind of like like a kid sucking a straw at the bottom of a McDonalds shake.)
