changing dash instrument lamp color? 700

I looked in the FAQ, and it says that by changing the lamps in the dash of your 740 will change the color that the dash lights up.

I had to pull my dash cluster off today as the lamps went off totally (loose connection), and the lamps seem to be only the usual yellow color. The dash seems to light up green due to a green colored panel which the yellow globe lights up...

Is it possible to change the green color of my dash to say blue or red?

I bought my 744T this spring, and it had already been converted to a "red" dash (and all the other interior display lights also) in a quite simple and inexpensive way.

The previous owner used bits of heat resistant red mylar (I think - maybe gel) film from a graphics arts or theater supply outlet - not sure which. He had cut 2" square pieces for each bulb and had shaped them into the sockets before inserting the bulbs. It doesn't seem to effect the fit and as yet, my dash has not burst into flames. Although slightly more difficult to see in ambient light (I think the dash uses phosphor paint which is designed to reflect green) its quite sufficient and preferable when completely dark.

an afterthought: the 140s were easier to convert, 1 bulb for the dash and a single strip (OEM green) over the top of the cluster.

I have tried Blue and Red lights (194 type) sold by Victor. These two varieties have a very dark tint to them even when the dash illumination dial is set to max (ie hard to see the numbers if there is any ambient street lighting). I have found success in changing the bulbs to orange using the Sylvania 194NA. They are reasonably bright but they are not glaring light like the clear bulbs that came OEM in the dash.

Try these 194NA's if you like the orange look.

The of the reflectors inside the cluster are a bluish-green tint. You can paint the bulbs the color of your choice with fingernail polish. I've had to do this many times for aircraft. (needed red bulbs) It may make them darker, though.

ah ok thanks guys. so even if I put an orange bulb in there the result won't be:

orange (bulb) + green (tint) = ??
