Rear end collison -- replace or keep bumper impact absorbers 700

Our 1990 740 was rear ended. Speed at impact is not known -- likely near 5 MPH.

Because we mounted a trailer light connector on the top of the bumper, we can determine the bumper and impact absorbers were driven forward about 3". The body panel above the bumper and below the trunk lid was damaged by the clip that attaches the trailer light plug.

How does one determine if the impact absorbers need to be replaced? Is there a Volvo specification?

Thanks

Curt

Body shops will not automatically replace them unless they don't return to the correct position.

Rear end collison -- replace or keep bumper impact absorbers 700

Did the bumper return to it's original position, or was it pulled back out? Is it straight? In my experince with these devices , if they returned to their original position with out any assistance it would probably be OK, safety wise, to reuse them. I remove the pair from the car and stand them side by side. they need to be pretty close the the same length.(1/4?) If not I personally would replace them replace them. If insurance is paying MAKE them buy NEW ones. Fairly easy to remove bumper, which probably will have to come off to properly repair rear panel anyway. Look for damage when the "shocks" mount. 700s' take the hit and appear OK at first glance. Look closely with bright light. These car are made to buckle. I have wagon that was backed into a bumper high concrete wall and had a trailer hitch.Don't know how fast because I bought it cheap after the accident. Bumper was pushed in two or three inches, the hitch took over from there and buckled roof and rear quarters ever so slightly. Have worked on quite a few of these cars that tooks hits to rear and most of them really did not appear hurt bad at first. Again, look closely. Sedans appear to be a little stiffer and not bend so bad, you didn't indicate what yours is. Hope this helps. rcs
