Removing rear bumper 200 1988

Rear bumper is sagging on one side. I need to remove and repair it. Would be grateful for information on how to do this. Thanks.

As Mac indicated the main attachment is with the through bolts in the shock tube that is in the frame horns. There are also two (?) bolts on each side (13mm?)that need to be removed. These are outside and hold the faceplate of the shock in place. Lots of PBBlaster after wirebrushing the nuts and threads. Allow plenty of soak time. You really need PBBlaster or Kroil to expect success here as the corrosion in this area is plentiful. There is also some attacment of the bumper to the rear quarter panel on each side.

Chances are the aluminum has corroded into dust in the area that the steel bolts attach the aluminum piece to the shock. If a replacement bumper is not available you can remove the cover from the bumper and install a length of steel in the channels that run the length of the aluminum piece. Drill the steel flat stock to match the holes in the shock and install new bolts. Replace the bumper cover and you should be better than new.

Oops! Yup there sure are 2 perside on the body bolts I totally forgot to mention... Thanks for the catch.... I would feel bad if this person was yanking and pulling with yet 4 bolts still holding the bumper..

I guess things are not so fresh in my mind as I think.. I must be healing.. Mac

"I would feel bad if this person was yanking and pulling with yet 4 bolts still holding the bumper.. "
If his bumper is as bad as indicated, he probably doesn't have to loosen/remove any bolts. A few good yanks should do it.

I know with my rear bumper, tapping it with a hammer results in a pile of white dust below the bumper shocks. The spare bumper I removed from my parts car is in better condition, yet one shock still popped off when I dropped it on the ground. Anyhow, picked up 2 sections of angle iron, 2" deep with holes (may have been used for racking) by 4', which may work.

No half decent bumpers in Cdn used? Depending on how the car looks you could drill right thru the cover and add fender washers and bolt the bumper back up.. Or pull the cover and use carriage bolts for a better appearance..

My bumper was ok more or less... I cleaned and coated that bad areas with a clear coat... After installing I hit that with undercoat.... Mac

No pick and pulls around here that I know of. I'm pretty sure I can fix what I have. Probably use carriage bolts which should bite into the Al. The rubber should cover any messes.

Note to David: Unless the nuts that hold the bumper to the shocks are easy to remove, it would be best to remove the bumper with the shocks to get bet access to the nuts. They may be so badly rusted on that socket torque will destroy them. In which case you'll have to cut them off. Try a metal cutting blade-mandrel setup on a drill.

If it is a wagon there are 2 access holes to pull the shock bumper mounts from. By lifting the cargo storage door seek these holes to either side of the frame of the storage area.

I have forgotten what size bolt heads are there, but you need a fairly long 1/2 drive extension. Pass the extension down thru the hole and install the socket that fits.. 7/8" maybe 15/16". This bolt is threaded to a welded nut under the car frame, and you can see these large bolts poking out from below as well.

Once you have out both a few tugs should have the bumper in your hands..

Or finding the shock mount plate to the bumper directly on the bumper could be the answer... It depends on why the bumper sags I guess...

Probably removing these first 2 larger bolts is the fastest way to get the bumper off. A bit of PB Blaster where you can see the bolts from below will help, and the rest of these 2 bolts should be fairly clean.

I suspect the sedans will be similar... Mac
