B20 waterpump question 140-160 1974

I have a leak where the heater return line feeds into the water pump on the right side of the engine. The return line has a small bracket welded onto it that is held in place by one of the waterpump mounting bolts. This bracket forces the pipe to mount to the pump at a very slanted angle, which causes the leak. Has anyone had the same problem and come up with a good fix? My immediate thought is to file an oblong hole in the bracket to allow for a more straight entry of the return line into the waterpump.

The pipe should go straight into the water pump, not at an angle at all. It would seem that yours has been bent in some way. ??? In any case, whatever you can do to make the angle go away is a good solution.

Thanks... good to hear that this wasn't intentional by Volvo - would have been a crappy design. I took a closer look at the bracket last night and it was indeed bent slightly. Hopefully I can make it work without butchering the part too much.

The pipe just pushes into the water pump and seals with a square edged O-ring. Perhaps the pipe is fouling somehow. Remove, inspect, reinstall holding the pipe square to the water pump hole. I usually smear a little silicone sealer on the o-ring too. Not too much, though - supposedly the o-ring can seal by itself.

John, that's what I was doing. But when I held the pipe square to the water pump hole - and it did slide all the way in judging by the o-ring, there is no way the hole in the bracket would line up with the bolt hole in the water pump. Straigthening the bracket/tab thingie may work, I hope. I'll try again tonite.
