B20 waterpump question 140-160 1974

I have a leak where the heater return line feeds into the water pump on the right side of the engine. The return line has a small bracket welded onto it that is held in place by one of the waterpump mounting bolts. This bracket forces the pipe to mount to the pump at a very slanted angle, which causes the leak. Has anyone had the same problem and come up with a good fix? My immediate thought is to file an oblong hole in the bracket to allow for a more straight entry of the return line into the waterpump.
