In-Line Magnetic Filters

Does anyone have experience with using in-line magnetic filters to keep their automatic transmission fluid lines clean? Is this a gimmick?

Actually, those filters are just that: filters.
They have a "paper" filter element(the one I took apart had plastic "paper"), as well as the magnet and a bypass valve, in case the filter gets clogged.
After one cleared up a serious power steering problem for me, I always use 'em in P/S and auto trans lines.
They're available at most good parts stores.

Many Autos come with a magnet in the pan. I beleive this is a better location because Metalic particles will naturaly settle, and buildup will be in the easy to clean pan rather than restricting a line. a magnet stuck outside the pan should work almost as well.

They've worked for me. Have one installed on my '74 with an auxillary cooler too.

One awaits me for the '86 ... it's going in (also with an aux cooler) on the next tranny flush and pan gasket replacement.

How do you know it worked?

About six months ago I placed a magnet in the power steering tank and recently pulled it out by sticking a clean screw driver in the tank. The magnet had a fine black covering of "stuff" on it. All this proves I think is that there was something in the fluid that stuck to the magnet instead of circulating. The car is a 92 740 with 185k.
