About six months ago I placed a magnet in the power steering tank and recently pulled it out by sticking a clean screw driver in the tank. The magnet had a fine black covering of "stuff" on it. All this proves I think is that there was something in the fluid that stuck to the magnet instead of circulating. The car is a 92 740 with 185k.
