'Check engine' light...where do I start? 200

Hi,

I have a 1989 240 series that I purchased not long ago. I had to go on a 500-mile trip this weekend. Thing runs great. Twenty miles from home, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. There seemed to be no appreciable difference in engine performance.

Seems to run OK. Anyone hazard a guess as to what to check? The timing belt is fairly recent.

Where do I find the diagnostic flashes? Is there a code in the Haynes manual?

What should I do? Is it safe to drive the car with the light on?

Thanks....

You might want to reset the light, if the light comes on again, change the o2 sensor, usally sensor replace at 50k miles

Go to : www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm
Don't worry about the 700-900....the info you want is there. I printed a copy and keep it in my glove box.

Under the hood, in front of the driver, between the strut tower and firewall, should be little black plastic box.....sort of looks like a relay. Top comes off. Inside there are # 'ed holes, and a probe (have to remove it from the holder) with a wire attached. Follow direction in info from above.

Not to worry about light being on....drove mine a long time (months) before I found the OBDC. My O2 connection was cruddy.

Hope this helps,

Al
