'Check engine' light...where do I start? 200

Hi,

I have a 1989 240 series that I purchased not long ago. I had to go on a 500-mile trip this weekend. Thing runs great. Twenty miles from home, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. There seemed to be no appreciable difference in engine performance.

Seems to run OK. Anyone hazard a guess as to what to check? The timing belt is fairly recent.

Where do I find the diagnostic flashes? Is there a code in the Haynes manual?

What should I do? Is it safe to drive the car with the light on?

Thanks....
