Power window relay location 200

Hi folks,

Could someone tell me where the power window relay is located in my 89 240DL. I have intermitant problems with the windows (sometimes work, other times not so much), have checked the fuses and connections at the switches and figure that the relay is the next thing to check.

If anyone has any ideas for possible solution please feel free.

thanks

Hi -

The newest 240 I have is a 1988, but your set-up is probably the same.

The only relay in the power window circuit is one that closes when the key reaches Position II ("run" in US terminology). All it does is keep the windows from operating without the key. It is located on a bar that crosses the dash below the center air vent and behind the coin tray. There are a number of relays there, including the two that operate the central locking system. Put a finger on the trim strip there as you turn the key, feel the click.

The usual problem is accrued dirt in the switches themselves. Quick fix is to swap the problem switch with one seldom used, such as the right rear door.

Next level is to remove and disassemble the switch (try to work inside a large clear food wrap bag, as the teeny weeny parts are spring-propelled, irreplaceable, and can fly quite far).

Clean out the old stuff and the balls and the contact pieces. Use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts, and use some dielectric grease to re-lube the pivots and balls. The grease helps hold things in place while reassembling, too.

Labor content is no more than 1/2 day - for the first time. Not much different from the switch swapping fix.

Good Luck,

Bob

PS. Post back if you need tips on removing the arm rest and switch.

If memory serves, there are two relays for the power windows. One for up and one for down. If the windows do not operate in either direction, I would continue to fiddle with the fuse block. My '84 GL wagon sometimes messes with my mind in the same way as yours. The windows do not work in either direction and the A/C is also non-functional. If I jiggle the second fuse below the middle of the fuse block (there's a bit of a gap in the middle of the row of fuses), which theoretically has nothing to do with either the windows or the A/C, then both start working again. Hmmm.

Er.. nope, only one relay for the windows. You are probably thinking about the power lock relays. The relay would be the last thing I would check. As was said the switches, and also the wires in the hinge area of the door, usually the drivers door because it is used the most. You can test the relay from the drivers door switch (it is easier than digging into the dash). Look for 12 volts in the red wire with the ignition switch on. If you get 12V there is nothing wrong with the relay or the red wire.
If you don't get 12 volts dig up under the drivers door pillar and unplug the power window harness to the door. Test for 12v on the red wire here(car side). If you get power here you have a broken wire in the door hinge area. If you don't get power here, you should then think about digging out the relay. You should also check the other wires in the door for breaks. They are usually plainly visible if you pull back the rubber bellows covering the wires in the door hinge.
Hope this helps

It may not be the fuse, but the spade connectors on the wires connected to the fuse block.

Had a somewhat similar problem on mine.

Cleaned and tightened spade connectors and problem went away.
