1989 Volvo 740 GL Front Oil Engine Leak 700 1987

Hi, the beast is leaking oil on the upper front of engine (230) behind the plastic timing chain cover. Seems to leak when under load. I noticed one of the plastic mounts for the cover cracked off but I don't think its leaking there. Its in that area and it just started. Any ides? Thanks....

Common for the valve cover gasket to leak, after age...
Note that the timing is a belt not a chain on your B230 engine.

Before tackling any oil leaks though, make sure your PCV system is not clogged (flame trap etc...) See FAQ for much info.

Is the Valve cover hidden alittle up front? I didn't notice it leaking from the side. It could be behind the timing BELT cover. I'll check the PCV stuff thanks.
BTW. Is there a decent diagram/picture/drawing of this engine? It would make it easier to viusalize what's going on. Thanks.

yah the front of the cover where the front end of the cam comes out is behind the plastic timing cover. Really close inspection should help distinguish a cam seal leak from a valve cover leak.

Diagrams are plentiful on the web.

This site is pretty brief but can help you until you get a book:

Great Link, Many Thanks.
If its the the camshaft seal, is that a big deal?
