lights in US version - photo S90-V90

Can anybody in US make for me a picture of V90 with switch on lights, in late evening? I would like to see what a difference between American version and European is.
Thanks in advance.

Here is my one:

Not too good visible in night, as you can see.

T.R.M.: congratulations !

Back to the topic :)
Does American version looks the same like this in my photo?
Or front blinkers are ON with double bulbs?

here I've made simulation of side lights "like in S80"

OK now I understand you better, I think S90-V90 1997

I have a USA s90, 1997. It is a late '97 as this model year also had "960" badging. Both cars are identical mechanically.

By "headlamps" I take it you mean low-beams. In the US, the yellow parking lights+turn signals(blinkers) are in the same housing, with 1 dual-filament bulb. (When you say dual bulbs, I presumed you meant 2 bulbs, 1 for blinker and 1 for parking.) The low intensity filament is "ON" with the low-beams, this gives us "positioning lights" or "parking lights" or "marker" lights, whatever term you prefer. The low intensity yellow light set is always "ON" for all positions of the headlight switch other than '0'(zero). When turn signal(blinkers) are activated the high intensity filament flashes, giving low-high-low-high effect during turn signal operation.

In your last S80 simulation photos I noticed only the low-beams are "ON", but no bulb in the parking/blinker housing is lit. Is this the Euro wiring(or your simulation)? Does yours have separate "city lights" in the main headlight housing, which would make them visible only from the front when low-beams are "OFF"?

I also noticed in this picture there already seems to be a side-fender turn signal between the front wheel housing and the front door. I presume, correctly I hope, that this is a standard feature on European cars. In the US, from side view at night, the OEM car's wiring+lighting will display low intensity yellow lights at front edges(roughly 90 degree sweep front-to-side) and low intensity red lights at rear edges(same 90 degree sweep). Hence there is no need in US-spec. for separate yellow marker lights, a la S80. Is this a retouched photo or did you actually put S80 lights in the bumper fascia of your v90? Either way it looks cool, and safer too.

BTW, I frankly prefer the the two-bulb solution in the 240, separate low intensity bulb for marker/parking/positioning vs separate high intensity bulb for blinker. I like the off-high-off-high effect.

OK now I understand you better, I think S90-V90 1997

By "headlamps" I take it you mean low-beams.

That’s right.

In the US, the
yellow parking lights+turn signals(blinkers) are in the same
housing, with 1 dual-filament bulb. (When you say dual bulbs,
I presumed you meant 2 bulbs, 1 for blinker and 1 for
parking.) The low intensity filament is "ON" with the
low-beams, this gives us "positioning lights" or "parking
lights" or "marker" lights, whatever term you prefer. The low
intensity yellow light set is always "ON" for all positions
of the headlight switch other than '0'(zero). When turn
signal(blinkers) are activated the high intensity filament
flashes, giving low-high-low-high effect during turn signal operation.

Everything in clear for me now :)

In your last S80 simulation photos I noticed only the
low-beams are "ON", but no bulb in the parking/blinker
housing is lit. Is this the Euro wiring(or your simulation)?

It is not simulation. I have small parking bulbs in main headlight housing.

Does yours have separate "city lights" in the main headlight
housing, which would make them visible only from the front
when low-beams are "OFF"?

Correct.

I also noticed in this picture there already seems to be a
side-fender turn signal between the front wheel housing and
the front door. I presume, correctly I hope, that this is a
standard feature on European cars.

That is right.

In the US, from side view
at night, the OEM car's wiring+lighting will display low
intensity yellow lights at front edges(roughly 90 degree
sweep front-to-side)

This is here forbidden. That’s why I am thinking about side markers like in S80.

and low intensity red lights at rear
edges(same 90 degree sweep)

This is in European version the same.

Hence there is no need in
US-spec. for separate yellow marker lights, a la S80.

Here also...

Is this a retouched photo or did you actually put S80 lights in the
bumper fascia of your v90? Either way it looks cool, and safer too.

... but it looks as you described. Thin is now simulation, but I am going to install this.

Is this BTW, I frankly prefer the the two-bulb solution in the 240,
separate low intensity bulb for marker/parking/positioning vs
separate high intensity bulb for blinker. I like the
off-high-off-high effect.

Only this off-high-off-high effect is legal here in Europe, because of visibility of blinker.
Thanks for clarification and patience, now everything is clear.

You're welcome, I learned something too! S90-V90 1997

I have been thinking of installing Euro-spec headlights for my s90 too. And now I know from you that I won't have a built-in low intensity yellow light(unless I keep the US blinker housing and install only the Euro main headlight housing). Is this US+Euro mixture possible?

Otherwise, I would have to use your S80 solution too. Funny, those S80 marker lights look amazingly similar to our old 1975 Plymouth Valiant's marker lights. (Sadly gone, fondly remembered.)

I find it odd that Volvo did not install a marker/parking light that would be visible at front side edge of the car. To merely wire the fender blinker to be "ON" with the low-beams would be insufficient since it would give a false impression of the length of the car.

What is Euro-spec headlight for S90 ?
As far as I know there is third standard for US and Europe together and S/V90 has these lights... I must check this out.

A stone hit one of my headlights and now it's got a hole and a huge crack in it. Time for one from the junkyard. I picked up a 300SE.

Warren,
Are you saying that the lights from the 300SE (MB?) will fit the late model S/V 90s? Or did you pick up the whole car?

That's one way to get decent lights! I've been wondering where I'll go when the V90 is redy for another owner or the junk yard. i know I want RWD and a straight six, so my choices of staion wagons will be limited. The V90 seems big right now with only me (mostly). When we take trips its wonderful, but grandkids ride in it infrequently. The only other care is the BMW 3 series, but know little about them other than there are tons of them sold to people that are younger than my son! Times changes, indeed.

Thanks

The car is in very good shape but needs some minor front end work. I started Saturday morning but I found out that I needed a puller for the inner tie rods. I'm off to the tool shop for one in the morning. I hope to have it fixed by Monday so I can get it in for an alignment.

The six is powerfull enough for the car and it has a lot of room so I can work on it. What a car!

Gregski,
Sorry, but do you mean a picture of the light switch or the headlights switched on? I have a digital camera and I'd be happy to take the picture and send it to you. I'm not sure how the latter (headlighs) will turn out on a picture, but I'll give it a try.

Sorry for my English
Whole car with headlights switched on. It does not be with main driving lights, only markers around.
I am thinking about some side lights (for better visibility of car in fog or night from side view..)
Maybe I can install US front blinkers, because, as far as I know you have different ones.. Here in my profile is picture of my ones, you can compare.

Can you put this picture to our brick’s gallery?

Thanks,

I installed Volvo OEM side repeaters on our 98 S90 and wired them such that they are on when the parking/headlamps are on. When turn signals are used, they blink on/off. It really inproves the visibility of the car from the side to have them on with the lights.

Gregksi,

I bought the Volvo OEM side repeater lights at IPDUSA.com. They are a clear lens with a yellow bulb. I also bought their OEM stype wiring harness kit as well. IPD's instructions clearly explain the 2 options for wiring the lights.

1 - Off all the time except when using the turn signals.

2 - On with the parking/headlamps and Blink with the turn signals.

They are not dual intensity lamps. They are either on or off.

I have really liked option 2. I wasn't sure at first but now that I've had them set up like this for a while I really like them.

Sorry, no digital camera yet.
