Stripped Bolt! Big Deal or Not? 200

As I was replacing the Sway Bar Bushing (Sway Bar to Frame) I stripped one of the Bolts (Passenger Side Rear Bolt). Should I worry about this. Should I tap it? Should I get a self-tapping bolt to fix it? What do you think? Is it worth worrying about?

Fix it. Those brackets must resist considerable forces during cornering.

It may be possible to tap to the next larger sized bolt -- possibly and SAE thread instead of metric.

It might also be possible to sneak up inside there and use a nut (with a longer bolt) behind the stripped captive nut.

If the bolt is in "nice 'n snug," then leave it and watch it. If you suddenly detect slushy steering in corners and/or a hammering or clunking sound on rough pavement, examine the bolt to see if it has pulled out a few threads or maybe is gone. (That would allow the pillow block to flex up 'n down, suported only by the remaining bolt, and slap the chassis.)

That's the time to retap the hole and use a larger bolt. You might find the next larger SAE size will work fine, whereas going to the next metric size would be a big jump.

Definitely fix that bolt. The bushing mount is what anchors the sway bar to the frame and could have an effect on handling if it works loose.

Good luck.
