So... I was driving from Hartford to Brandeis for a gig, when the cat pipe finally succumbs to rust and cracks right before the actual converter. 150 miles of exhaust-less driving and a headache later, I'm back at school. Just wondering what a decent price for the replacement is... the rest of the exhaust system is fine, about a year old. I don't want to be driving around with the loudest 240 on campus for too long...

89 245 auto tranny w/243,000 miles. still not enough.

You might order an o2 sensor while you're at it, and do really pukka soldered and sealed connections on the wires. They're a b***^ to get out, and a new one won't need to be replaced as soon, hopefully.

Some 89's have the o2 in the cat, some in the pipe. My order was the reason fcp now lists the two different kinds, but I put the new o2 in the new cat and it works fine even thought the original was in the pipe. You need a bit more wire for in the cat.

Look at all the sections front to back before you order, and think about gaskets, clamps, and new bolts, and have some anti-sieze ready for the bolts in case you need to take them apart someday. I use new bolts for the old clamps, buy them at the local hardware.

If you mail-order, might as well pay postage once and get everything you're going to need.

According to autozone.com, your local AutoZone sells a direct replacement converter with a lifetime warranty for $75.99.

Also need a cat. Called my Autozone and they had 1 of these direct fit cat's by Arvin for 71.99. Are they any good?

If it's the bolt-on model, go for it. The Arvin that I bought for my wife's Metro convertible fit like a glove and functioned perfectly.

Went to AutoZone to check out the bolt in cat from Arvin. It looked like a bolt in replacement except it didn't have the O2 socket. The also sell a Bosal for $99 that they list as OEM equvalent. That one wasn't in stock and would need to be ordered.

fcpgroton has them for about $125-140.

so... I'm guessing that as long as the bolts aren't rusted to hell, it would be as easy as it looks to replace this? just unbolt the old one and put on the new?

does my 89 have EGR?

do I need to replace anything else while I'm at it?
