Banging 200

My wifes 89 245 has devolped a banging noise from the rear as if the shock or spring broken and hitting. When I crawl under the car nothing seems loose or broken. On two instances it just stops for a couple days then returns. Any ideas?

Thanks

Inspect the exhaust for broken rubber mounts, and a rusted-through pipe just behind the right rear wheel.
While you're under there, see if any of the torque arm or panhard rod rubber bushings are shot- a pry bar may be needed to push on them enough to move around.
