Should I buy this Car. 200 1988

I saw a 1984 2-door turbo in the newspaper the other day. The car needs a new turbo. It has 196000 miles, and a four speed with overdrive. The body is rust free with only one minor ding in the drivers door. It has Ipd swaybars and shocks and the Virgo wheels. The leather seats need help as well as the the dash. The asking price is $650

I already have an 1988 240 which is deafinitly a keeper, I have thought about buying the turbo and taking the wheels, swaybars, shocks and guages into my car, but since the body is so nice I would in a way hate to take a 242 off the road. What do you think of the price? would this car be worth putting back on the road. I havent driven it, but I have been told the engene and transmission are still good. I have always liked the idea of a two door turbo, but how desirable is this car really?

Thank you very much and Happy Holidays

the reality is that you will need money and time. if you've got both, go for it.

sounds like it'd be a great candidate for a V8 conversion

I would absolutly offer less...just cause I'm that kinda guy... but if the price is "firm" I'd buy it anyway... worst case senario... you have to part it out and you will make money on the deal plus get some cool goodies for your car... cheap. Best case senario it'll be some stupid little thing wrong and you'll have a new friend that will be part of your family for years to come. either way you win.
By the way... a 76 244 that I bought a while ago...cheap cause it would not run...turns out the dist. cap was on backwards, My 86 245... cheap cheap
had a oil soaked, nasty blade fuse for the fuel system, you know the one next to the "Plinth" replaced it and have done little else and been driving it a year...so it does happen.
Good Luck and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Go for it. I didn't think twice about my 2 door. I have always been in and around 244's so when I had the chance at a buying a $150 76 262, I jumped on it and its great. It needed a lot of work but that didn't matter to me, I wanted a little project. The 242/262 is also a little easier to get in and out of when your 6'2".

Good luck

Great car, maybe greatest of the 240 line, great price. You can not lose at that price.

I would try to obtain the 242 turbo-if you cant work on its needs now--find a dry place for it to rest till you can work on it--I tell you this--because--this will probably be your most favorite volvo you will ever own-once all the runing issues are addressed. A few years ago here in Coastal NJ--there were 242 turbos around--they are slowly disappearing from the roads --rust-NJ state emission testing and the fact that the last 240 turbo anything was made in 1985-are all factors. As far as the current owners asking price of 650.00--Id bet he would take less--most people rarely ask what they will really take for a car. Id check the car out well to determine if there are any reasons to avoid jumping into it-rusty floors-or any other major rust issues, and perhaps offer less than the asking prics--worth a shot-but--if you feel the bug hit--and you really like the car--dont let it slip away. Good luck

It's definitely worth considering.

Besides the turbo, how's the wiring harness? If that's bad, it could very well be the problem with the car. Mysterious things happen with bad wires. :)

Sounds too nice to part. Depending on the source, a good used turbo can be from $50-$350.

If you're lucky, the 84 is intercooled.
