I'm pretty happy with the 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe T5 I put in using v-performance.com's adapter plate. It's interchangeable with the Mustang trannys.
You have to use a Ford clutch disc, throwout bearing and, depending on whether you use a T5 that was mated to a 2.3 Ford 4 cyl. or a 5.0 Ford V-8, you use either the Volvo or a Ford pilot bearing.

You hve to fabricate some minor parts, the most critical of which is the modification of the shift fork, but it can be done with a drill and a file and some hardware store metal. Ctandard crossmember works fine.

The Turbo coupe tranny, has tighter ratios, very closely matching the ratios of the m41. The 5.0 tranny would give you a ~10% higher top end.

You have to have the Volvo Driveshaft mated to the Ford tranny yoke. It had to be shortened from my m40. I had a driveshaft shop do it about $100 with new u-joints.

Pretty much any ford tf from this chart will fit:

Note the input shaft lengths and piot diameters.

2.3 trannys are usually cheaper and not as beat up as the Mustang ones which typically get pounded to bits.

Be sure to have the output shaft bushing replaced in a used tranny before you install it. I'm pulling mine to have that done.

Go to uniberp's post, this forum, of August 21, 2003. The guy near Cape Cod is Don Thibault in East Sandwich, Mass., p1800@gis.net. John Parker, v-performance.com, has all the stuff for the conversion. In my AT to MT swap I decided to go with the M41 rather than the T5 because even with the bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, etc. it still came out more economical (about $400, but you already have all that stuff), although, John Parker's prices are very reasonable -- I just couldn't find a T5 for less than $350 plus shipping. Don Thibault asked $550 for the complete M41. He might be able to do better if you only need the gearbox. If you can find a T5 for about $100, I would consider the conversion worth doing. You might consider a Want Ad in the Classifieds of this and the other Volvo sites. There are plenty of M41s lying around in New England, it just takes a bit of searching to find them. Of course, the fact that all the junkyards are snowed in makes winter scrounging less appealing.

The one in my 73 145 is out of a 91 5.0. It's nice shifting into 5th gear and not worrying about an overdrive button or lever. There are also dozens of shifters for them to suit whatever your needs may be.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by "91 5.0"? Thanks.

I'm also located in CT, and I ended up going to eastern PA to get my m41 after I blew up my original. I later recieved an e-mail from a guy in CT who had one laying around. This was last summer so I don't know if he still has it, but if you want the guys e-mail address just e-mail me. There is also a P1800 guy near Cape Cod who rebuilds them a sells them with a warranty (will cost way more than a used one though). I looked into a t5 swap to, but it was going to be a lot more money (the coversion parts alone, no including the transmission, cost as much as a used m41)so I figured I would just keep blowing up m41's for a while.
Good Luck

What's going on in that engine bay? VPD supercharger? I wanna hear the details, it looks great, and immensely clean!

Yep, VPD Supercharger - the first one to go on a 142 I believe. Right now I'm running about 8lbs of boost, with everything else stock. Well, rebuilt, but stock rebuilt. Even with no other modifications, its quick. Really quick (for a 4cyl. Volvo anyway). I painted the car about a year and a half ago and did the suspension last summer (shorter progressive rate up front and slightly lower / stiffer springs in back + Bilsteins all around and all new bushings). I'll post some more pics in the gallery.

m41 to m40 140-160

hey nice pic, not a spot of rust. So far ive found only an m40 for 200 bucks but thats out of oklahoma so its gonna cost a fortune for shipping.but im sure it will be a heck of a lot cheaper than any thing else. but, becuase the m40 if smaller in lenght because it doesnt have the OD unit the what could be done so it fits. replace the drive shaft or is there any type of adaptions or connectors?

Wouldn't the unit from a T-Bird Turbo Coupe be a better unit, with gear ratios intended for a 4 cylinder? Or, is it all taken care of by the final drive ratio in the 4 cyl. cars?
