Clunking struts. Tighten the shaft nuts? 700 1988

It's great to be driving 'ol blue again. The new clutch just feels like oiled velvet.

Now it's back to the little things I had planned to get to before the clutch problem sidelined me.

Both front struts clunk a bit. It's not the radius rod bushings. With the hood open, I can hold the bushing under the strut shaft nut and washer and feel it click (clunk) up and down as I bounce on the fender. There's about 1mm play between the bushing and the strut mount.

Can this be adjusted out by tightening the top 24mm nut on the strut shaft? I'll have to hold the shaft and use an offset box end wrench it looks like.

Strut cartridges and shocks are on the short list for the car. Probably in the next two months.

Clunking struts. Tighten the shaft nuts? 700 1988

It is easy to have the bottom of the strut cartridge off center when the nut is tightened down. The cartridge then rattles in the MacPherson strut. Go ahead, ask me how I know this. On my car I removed the strut to correct the problem. I did try tightening the nut without removing the strut, but evidently every time I tried, the strut cartridge was still slightly off center. It sure rattled over the small bumps. On some the the struts, you can look up the bottom of the strut and see the bottom of the strut cartridge and whether or not it is centered.

Thanks John,

But would this account for the 1mm vertical play I'm seeing between the top bushing and the mount? I'll try and get a picture to post asap.
