740 mirror 700 1989

I own an 89 740 wagon and I have been having a problem with "hit and runs" on my car. I live on a narrow street where often, larger cars must pull aside and let others through. Last week I came outside to notice that the black bumper cover on the front was knocked half off by car. Today, my driver side mirror was smashed. I was wondering if volvo makes just the mirror part, rather than the whole housing. I have a new one on the right, and cant afford a new one left right now. I was also wondering if it would be cheaper to go to a glass store and have one specialy cut, and epoxy it on. If so, what would be a good, strong epoxy to use. Thanks for your help.

My left mirror fell off on the interstate after it had been epoxied back on. I went to the Volvo dealership and bought a mirror only for $26. They put it on for free (15 seconds). I haven't had any problems with it.

Yes, you can get a replacement glass for your mirror from Volvo. I got mine from Swedish Engineering for $33 a few years ago. It will already be stuck to the plastic mounting pad with the heater element.

And yes, a glass shop can do it for less. The glass for my 945 drivers mirror was priced at over $50 about two months ago.(the way it mounts to the motor changed in 1992 or so)
A local glass shop ordered just the glass part and stuck it to my plastic mounting pad for $25. It looks just as good as the origional glass. They said they could not get it as good if they had cut it on sight.

If you need help getting it out I'm pretty sure the FAQ's has it. Or we can help.

    Happy New Year,
    Chuck

I have purchased used mirror assemblies from ebay for about $25.00 I got one for the passenger side last year and another one for the drivers side about a month ago. This would probably be a cheaper and easier solution to your broken mirror than having a special mirror cut. They are pretty easy to remove and install. Go to ebay and search for "volvo 740 side mirror" and you should find some available. Or you can usually find one at a local salvage yard. If you just want to glue a simple small round mirror to the housing, as a temporary fix, you can you most any type of epoxy or adhesive. Goop brand make a good Automotive adhesive - you can get this at Lowe's or Home Depot.
