My son and I both have 81's with noisy main fuel pumps. In Bentley (page 230-10) a "fuel pressure damper" is mentioned as a Volvo remedy to resolve complaints of fuel pump noise. It is a small contraption about 1 1/2 inches across that mounts in the main fuel pump inlet hose about two inches from the pump. I've seen lots of posts on the BB about noisy fuel pumps, but I don't remember seeing any about this fuel pressure damper (Volvo part 1389725-1). Has anyone had experience with this?

I think that the bentley book is refering to the Fuel Accumulator. The ACC is supposed to dampen the pulses from the fuel pumps to allow better cold and warm starts by keeping the line pressure after shut down. It also stated in my Volvo Factory Manual that the ACC can be fitted to vehicle without them to help "DAMPEN OUT THE FUEL PUMP PULSES THAT CAUSE NOISY FUEL PUMP OPPERATION." I hope this helps. Good Luck!
Sincerely,

Thanks for the reply. Bentley shows the "Fuel Pressure Damper" as a separate part from the fuel accumulator. It shows the damper as a small part, about 1 1/2 inches long, that mounts in the main fuel pump inlet hose. Bentley says the damper is designed to help reduce the amount of sound transmitted into the car. I was wondering if anyone on the BrickBoard had tried this part. Bentley says Volvo has the part available to resolve complaints of fuel pump noise which is a complaint I hear a lot with 240's. My son called the dealer, but found out he wants $115 for the damper so it's on hold for a while. I'm going to keep my eye out at junkyards for one. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one to test out. Someday we'd like to quiet these pumps down. Both of us have noisy main pumps. Thanks.

So this "Fuel Pressure Damper" mounts in the inlet fuel hose, right? It is not a piece of material that mounts above the fuel pump. Hmmm. I have never seen one. Do you have a picture of what one looks like? I would like to know what to look out for next time I hit the boneyards. Thanks for your time.

Check Bently page 230-10. It has a picture. I'd send you one, but I don't have the capability. It mounts in the inlet line to the main pump. I'll be watching for one whenever I go to a junkyard. Maybe another BrickBoarder will be able to post a picture. I haven't yet received any comments from anyone who has actually used one, but it sounds promising.

Just saw this in the Bentley manual page 230-10.
"To resolve complaints of fuel pump noise, Volvo has available a fuel pressure damper part #1389725-1". Can be added if not allready present.

I've owned 6 240's and every one of them had a bad tank pump at one time or another. This caused the main pump to be noisy.
You can hear a slight noise on a 240 that is funnctioning fine.
It's not loud, is this what your talking about?
I bet 60% of the 240's out there have bad tank pumps or or the small hose that connects the tank pump is bad.

I replaced the small hose on the in-tank pump and tested the pump's flow. It pumps a full stream without much noise. I think the noise I hear is the main pump. Then I noticed the damper mentioned in Bentley, but I don't remember any mention of it lately on the board. Thanks for the info.

Another cause of pump noise is a bad fuel pressure regulator, on the front end of the injector fuel rail. It's not an expensive part and it's very easy to replace. Without enough miles on the car it makes sense to replace it as a matter of preventative maintenance, and to eliminate it as a possibility for causing your pump noise.
ne quick check for your fuel pressure regulator is to pull off the vacuum line going to the intake manifold. If you smell gas in the line or can see evidence of gas, replace it immediately. You can also test the diaphragm with a vacuum tester. Check your Bentley for the testing sequence and specs.

I did that too before. It seems that the tank pump can be intermittant.
Works fine out of the tank but quits randomely in the tank.
I found that when the main pump started being noisy I would shut the engine off and restart it and the noise would go away because the tank pump would then start. Have you tried the old trick of unplugging the tank pump fuse and seeing if the noise changes?
I'm curious to hear what that part is your talking about. Definetly post if you decide to install it.
