shifter light access 900 1996

Hi,

My Chilton(read 'lame') service manual states that in order to change the shift indicator light I need to essentially remove the console...true?

Tom

I am not sure what Chiltons are calling a console, not even sure if they know. It is only necessary to remove the plastic surround of the shifter to gain access to the bulb.

Dear Tom,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. According to some recent posts, the shifter console should be removed to access the shift indicator light. I've not done this. However, I've removed center console in order to replace carpets.

If you need/want detailed guidance, reply and I'll post: don't want to bother you with stuff you already know.

All the best for a Good, Healthy 2004: you, yours, your cars!!

Yours faithfully,

spook

Dear Shaner,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. The console comes out easily.
(a) Remove two screws (Torx) located between the seat heater switches (or the seat heater switch hole covers) and the emergency brake
(b) open the lid of the console storage bin, and gently pry up the small panel in the bottom of the storage bin
(c) remove the two screws under the panel
(d) remove the ash tray by lifting the lever at the bottom of the tray
(e) lift the console gently and slowly
(f) disconnect the seat heater switches and the connector to the rear floor light at the back of the console
(g) remove the black plastic cover that surrounds the shift lever (it should come free, once the console has been unscrewed)
(h) remove the console.

Hope this helps.

Yours,

spook

p.s. the shifter light enable the gear selected to be seen at night
