Stiff Steering 200 1986

I have an issue with steering on my 245 not matter if it is warm or cold outside. It would seem that there is an air bubble in the line or the pump is not pushing enough hydralic to power th steering. Maybe there is a jam with something else?

This is the symtom - I would turn left to right and it would go from tough to easy back to tough and it would seem that there would be over steer, but I think the latter is due to having to force when it is hard. Does anyone have any ideas of what this is? What should I look for? Any remedies?

Thanks

A new lower steering column u-joint in my '86 245 solved that exact problem.

Heat up the U-Joints in your steering column slightly with a heat
gun, and then grease them. This stiff-loose-stiff-loose ... behavior
is indicative of sticking U-Joints. If that doesn't work, you'll
need to replace the joints.

Does this also happen in the 7/9XXX series?

Yep. Last fall I replaced a u-joint on my '91 740 (thanks to the always helpful and generous Mr. Sargent).

The symptom was a bit different -- rather than the "cogging" that I experienced with the 240, the 740 was just muscle-building stiff.

And wife didn't want to build her biceps.

A squirt of penetrating oil on the u-joint loosened it for a week or two, and then it bound up again.

The arrangement is a little different on the 740 -- the u-joint and the steering column are integrated. But overall, the 740 was considerably easier to repair than the 240.

there is a warning on my 90 740 on the column about the SRS system. Any concerns on this as you replaced the u joints?
thanks

I can't speak about your car. My '91 740 has an air bag, and nothing happened with it when I replaced the u-joint.
