164 zenith carbs 140-160

While searching for brake parts on rusted out 164s i found one with set of Zenith Strombergs complete. Are they same size as 140 with different jets, will they bolt on to 140 cast manifold[modified using b20e exhaust?. I know they are not well liked by most Brickboarders but properly refurbed and tuned would they suit bored and stroked b20e as discussed in length on other forum?.I dont think the people that design these things are dodos, apart from diaphrams perforating they are simple enough. In Australia we had Torana with triples[stock]that won our big race at Bathurst. What i am saying is should i bother or leave them alone and look for SUs or use my own Kjet system. Best to all for year Jack McIntyre.

I have a 1971 with them on it and they have never been rebuilt since they were new. I know this because the car has been in my family since it came off the dealer floor! The only drawback is the diaphragms getting holes in them and the need to check to make sure there is enough fluid in them.
Care is the best preventative medicine for the ZS's!

Thanks men, i will keep kjet, rated 135hp stock and feels like it and i understand it. Next question i have spare b20e djet head to port and fit larger valves, is it as good as my current b20e kjet head?, i read on posts somewhere that there are differences in exhaust ports on some heads. What if any mods can i do on kjet plenum to enhance flow besides matching ports?, cold air intake?, airbox mods?. TIA Jack McIntyre.

I think it would be a crime against nature to remove a good working K-jet to install Strombergs.
For what it is worth, the Stromberg is a largely misunderstood carb. It is as adjustable as the SU, but requires a rather special little tool to do it. The needle moves, not the jet. That said, the SU is better, makes more power, and is more responsive. But K-jet makes more power than either.

    Hey Jack!

I don't think they are any different at all, but they are, for most purposes,
not operator-adjustable and not adjustable while running as are the SUs.
There is also the wear and tear on temp compensators and bypass valves,
which are sore points with me. If you can find a way to get them perfectly
    adjusted they are fine.

BTW the std manifolds on B20, B30 and even B18 have the same carb spacing.

The Strombergs will bolt up and work fine... Not sure if they are jetted differently or spaced differently between a 140 or 160. One of the big problems with those as I recall is adjusting them... that is, special tools and stuff.

If I were you, and assuming it works, I'd stick with the Kjet. Run it with for now until you find something better like a pair of webers or even some 2" SUs. I wouldn't bother with the Strombergs unless you can get them for the right price (about $free).

My own experience with the Zenith has not been wonderful, but could make them run. They were the first of the polution control devices and not very adjustable. The SU carbs were much better, and the K jet system of fuel injection was better, in my opinion. Will they fit? Believe so but as you say it is probably a difference in jet size. Perhaps the Walrus will respond as I think he has had more experience.
