'92 960 wagon code 3-1-4 900

I understand this to be the CMP sensor code? Apparently its mounted to the rear of the engine, on the head? It looks to have 3 wires on a pigtail with a plug. The wires are green, black and red, i think. My question is this: I read the codes, only getting a 3-1-4. I cleared the code, restarted and ran the car for a few days and had the code re-appear. I can look at the pulse coming from the camshaft sensor on my o'scope and see, what i guess, is a reed or hall effect switch open and close. I can disconnect the sensor while the car is running and get a very brief stutter in the idle. I have felt this at idle while in the car also, but not all the time. Upon disconnecting and reconnecting the sensor while running I notice no code or check engine light. So, how many times does it take for the sensor to not give a feedback to the computer before the code is generated? And, how come no "intermittant CMP sensor" code instead of a 3-1-4? I really wonder if its a problem somewhere else or is it always the sensor? And, how hard is it to get off and replace?

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!

I disconnected and reconnected the CMP harness connector behind the head 5-6 times on my 1992 960 and have had no engine light or code since.

Yes, it is a hall effect sensor.

It takes 25 seconds with out a signal to trip the code. Then the computer doubles the injection and ignition pulses, there is no intermittant code choice.

Assuming that the sensor has never been replaced that would be the most likely cause but I would check the connection for a tight corrosion free fit first. See if that cures it, and then move on to replacement. I ended up replacing mine at around 200K miles. I do remember cleaning that connection about a year or two before replacement, maybe the pulse gets a little weak with age until it cannot overcome and corrosion, so cleaning the connection only delayed the end of the sensor.

It is not hard to replace, getting the old one out is the biggest challenge, the replacement has a little looser fit. The two torx bolts can cause a headache though, make sure you use a quality tool, not one from a cheap kit, if the head strips out then a 30 minute job is going to take hours.
