I've just repaced the high pressure hose between the pump and the steering gear. What is that two pieced clamshell-like thing hose clamped to the original hose? Is it protection from rubbing against the back of pump? Do I need to mount it to the new hose?

The clamshell piece dampens vibration/noise from that hose. If you do not have either, don't bother. It did make a difference on my '86.

Okay, that makes sense. As long as it has a purpose, I'll go ahead and mount it. First, I'll drive a few days without it and see if I notice a difference.
