'92 960 wagon code 3-1-4 900

I understand this to be the CMP sensor code? Apparently its mounted to the rear of the engine, on the head? It looks to have 3 wires on a pigtail with a plug. The wires are green, black and red, i think. My question is this: I read the codes, only getting a 3-1-4. I cleared the code, restarted and ran the car for a few days and had the code re-appear. I can look at the pulse coming from the camshaft sensor on my o'scope and see, what i guess, is a reed or hall effect switch open and close. I can disconnect the sensor while the car is running and get a very brief stutter in the idle. I have felt this at idle while in the car also, but not all the time. Upon disconnecting and reconnecting the sensor while running I notice no code or check engine light. So, how many times does it take for the sensor to not give a feedback to the computer before the code is generated? And, how come no "intermittant CMP sensor" code instead of a 3-1-4? I really wonder if its a problem somewhere else or is it always the sensor? And, how hard is it to get off and replace?

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!
