clutch alignment tool 744ti 700 1988

Hi Brickboarders!

The almost-dead clutch in my sister's 225K mile 88 744Ti is still holding steady, but I'm ready to replace any day now. I got the clutch kit from FCP, but they don't have (and can't get) the alignment tool.

Does anyone have a source for that, or a homemade alternative?

Many thanks!

an old input shaft, or part therof, works the best, especialy if you have to drive out the old pilot bushing. if you have a good relationship with your local Volvo shop, they might lend you one. I also know that some Mazda and Volvo share the same clutch bushing size and spline count.

Oh Yeah, Replace the Pilot Bearing While You're In There. 700 1988

I had one freeze up on me once. Not only is it a bummer to have to go in and replace it later, but it can sometimes be very difficult to remove the transmission shaft from one that has siezed.

Make that 22-spline (see post below) — (nmi) 700 1988

The other guys helped you but I can't believe it doesn't come in the kit... Every clutch I've done (No Volvos yet) has come with the cheapie splined plastic one.
What the heck is with the IPD and Groton Clutch kit. Hense the name 'KIT'?

It's the Sachs OEM 3 piece kit with clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing. Also includes a little packet of spline grease.

It's not something IPD or Groton put together, it's sourced from Sachs as such. This was the first clutch I'd ever replaced (in a car) and didn't know others came with the centering tool.

I got mine in one of the auto supply chains (ie Napa) a few years ago for about $5. It's molded plastic about 5" or 6" long, with ring on the back end for hanging on a hook.

You need the 20-spline one (about .900" OD), with a nominal .585" pilot OD size.
(dimensions are approximate — due to the molded plastic variance)

I found the same item IPD sells at my local Autozone. $2.

A couple of ideas:

Fashion a homemade one from a properly sized wood dowel wrapped with shim stock (fancy name for strips of beer can aluminum) if necessary, in strategic spots, to make it fit the pilot bearing and the disk splines.

or

Scrounge up an old trans input shaft at a junk yard.

Note: I've been successful on more than one occasion just eye-balling it when I tighten down the pressure plate and being able to slide the shaft home by putting the trans in gear and roating the output shaft back and forth slightly while I worked it in.
