Is choke removal an easy job? Help needed urgently 200

I have a 1982 240 Dl volvo and it is having a really rough idle when the car is first warming up....after riding it the engine soudn usually smoothes out. I opened up the choke today (right side of the engien connected to air intake). IT was FULL of oil and gunk (last owners were old people:(....

I am thinking of fully removing the whole choke and cleaning it out as it was really dirty.

I also saw a loose hose, about 1/2 inch in length, right behind the rotor cap...one end was loose...so i thought maybe this was my rough idle problem (chop chop noise from engine when warming up). But i couldnt' seem to find anywhere where the thing woudl plug into???

It was driving me mad...

Anyways..if anybody could help give me directsion on how to remove the choke...and where that loose vacuam hose goes to..

Thanks:)

I am in the US and i'm pretty sure it's a LH injection system...although not 100% sure. It's definately not a carbuerator model :)

That loose vacuam hose...my first thought was PCV valve...but it still needs to be plugged in somewhere...i'll keep looking

Thanks

i really don't know if it's a carb model..hmm....it's LH tronic i beleive?...so i'm guessing it's not

How would i know if it was a carburator model?

I found a vacuam hose (i belive) line behind the rotor cap but i can't figure out where it goes....it like has no place to plug it into..strange...

all i need to do is to somehow remove the choke now and really clean it out...it was full of nasty gunk....with the preliminary cleaning i did

I seem to remember seeing the word choke used for throttle in some U.K. automotive books. Maybe we're talking about cleaning the throttle body. Is there a control to the left of the steering wheel labeled CHOKE? To continue, if this is a K-system, that hose may be the one from the flame trap. It would plug into a hole in the front of the mechanical air meter just to the left of the duct from the air cleaner. It can be a bear to get back in if the hose has hardened from age.

oh..i also forgot to mention..the hose is really small in lengeth(1.5 to 2.5 inches)...and maybe about 1/3 an inch in diameter...so it's not going to stretch anywhere far..

"i really don't know if it's a carb model"
Ahh. I've been holding back because I wasn't sure what you had from your descriptions/terminolgy.

If you're in the U.S., then it should be a fuel injected car.
If you are in Canada, and the 240 is an '84 or older then it may be a carbed engine.

Do you have the owner's manual (try glove box)? If you are in Canada, the Haynes volvo 240 manual is available from Canadian Tire for $19.99, and has a section (4B) for carburettors. The Bentley's manual is said to be better but doesn't cover earlier models (and may not cover carbs).

Is your engine a CARB or Fuel Injection System. This would help in solving your problem. Being it's an 82 I would presume you have the K-Jet (CI) FI System. Air Leaks in this system really cause havoc on cold starts. Good Luck!

If you have any vacuum lines disconnected your car will run rough. Just recently experienced this on my carbed 240DL. There are two lines that connect to the engine block behind the distributor with a plastic connector. One had a small break. Ran great after replacing. Hope this helps.

The engine is a carburetor model?
