Info on the TCM control of the A341E... 900

Working on a project to put a 5cyl motor into a 7 series, and I'm planning on using the b6304 tranny. I know that it is an electronically controlled trans, but if I understand correctly, the TCM is seperate from the engine control, although it has a few ECM inputs. Does anyone have any pinout info for the TCM so I can hotwire it into behaving correctly, or any info specifically on how to remove it from ECM dependence?

I don't have the info. you're looking for but I think this would be pretty difficult to do. The TCM doesn't just use inputs, it is basically symbiotic with the Motronic controller. The various adaptive functions of the tranny are directly influenced by what the engine is doing. From memory, the TCM needs engine load info. especially to determine what to do. Absent this, I think it goes into limp-home mode.

Thats somewhat of my dilemma. With the pinout info, I may be able to get the inputs needed for engine load, speed etc... Perhaps theres a a manual type trans that will bolt up to the bellhousing?

Now THIS is sorta interesting. The car models it references use the same trans the 960's do (the a34x series). Looks like it really does just take the two "necessary" inputs, namely speed and throttle postion.

Anyone with a 960 want to do some quick checks? Is there a kickdown cable run to the trans or not? (if no, the TPS is sending the signal for throttle)

If not, how many connectors are on the TPS? My 850 TPS is a 3 cond sensor (meaning its a simple pot sensor, no idle switch). Perhaps the 50-42 transaxle uses a low voltage reading for idle... perhaps the 960 sensor has the idle switch. (technically, the idle switch is not necessary, i need only route the voltage from the TPS to the trans TPS input, and im golden. lockup may engage during coasting, if anything, will give a slight jerk on acceleration...)

The 960 has no idle switch. The computer presumes idle from the voltage reading. No kickdown cable, but rather a kickdown switch located on the throttle cable. It's a simple on-off switch. I'm not sure how you'd accomplish the ignition timing control, but I guess you can probably just do without that.

I wonder if things changed since 92, my 94 uses the throttle position sensor for any kick downs, there is no switch on the throttle cable. On the trans, as far as I know there is the PNP switch which senses what gear is selected, a temperature sensor to lock up the convertor when it nears a certain temperature under certain conditions and hook ups to the valve body to electronically control shift points, and maybe the switch mode buttons. From what I have gathered here on the board this trans is used in some Japanese models ie. Lexus, Mitsub. and some light duty trucks. And is very reliable, I have 242,000 miles on mine and maybe 25,000 of those miles towing an 1800# pop up camper.

Mine uses the TPS for kick-downs as well, but there's also an "on-off" switch mounted on the throttle cable where it comes through the firewall. It is switched on when the pedal is completely floored. It requires the tranny to make a mandatory downshift to the lowest possible gear it can make without overreving the engine. For instance at speeds less than ~75mph it will do an instantaneous 4 to 2 downshift (skipping third). It also shuts down the A/C compressor (I think, unless this feature is controlled by the TPS). It's a kind of "holy $%*&, lets go!" switch. There is a distinct "click" when you floor it enough and it meets with some resistance. I think it's Volvo's way of making you think before you invoke it. There's kind of two positions on my pedal...floored and floooooored.

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to pull the switch when I find a donor 960. The mode switches, this WOT switch, etc., that are really just attached to the trans should be able to be tranferred pretty easy. It looks like the TPS is the only thing that is an to the trans... as long as I pull all the wiring and the little electornic anciliaries, It ought to turn out quite well. Can't wait to try this little theory out... thanks for the info guys, if you stumble accross anything further, I'd love to hear it!
