Jetronic 2.4 or 3.1 200

O.K. I'm sure this is a stupid question but here goes.
I just bought a 1989 240DL and the mass air flow meter is missing. My service manual says that this year model could have a Jetronic 2.4 or a 3.1, how do I tell the difference. Is there a plate somewhere that would have this information??

The previous owner "thought" he was a mechanic but instead of looking in a manual he just started replacing parts. He tried for 2 yearts to get it to crank with no luck. I bought it Saturday and was able to get it to crank and run on Sunday by replacing the system fuse. It still has several "issues" that I need to deal with but it looks like it's going to be a great car.

Thanks a bunch,
Tony

I think that the fours could be either 2.4 or 3.1. I saw Jet 3.1
hardware on a crashed later 240 in a junkyard in NJ when I was
looking for an airflow meter. I've heard that some of the 4-cyl.
engines in the 740s used a system called Rex/Regina, made up mostly of GM
G.M. components, where the king provided the spark and the queen
squirted the fuel. Sort of bassackwards if you think about it...
.
I don't know what the V-6 engines used, but the later (960) straight
six engines used Bosch Motronic of some type.

Jetronic 2.4 or 3.1 200

Pretty sure is is a 2.4 requiring the Bosch 0 280 212 016 AMM. I think I have the numbers right but it is commonly called the 016 AMM so only the last 3 numbers are important. You can verify by checking the ECU under the kick panel by the front passengers right knee. That ECU should be 0280000561 (pink label, some are white) or 0280000951 (white label) unless it is a 50 states (California emissions) car. I have never seen an LH 3 '89 240.
Come to think, the plug for your AMM must be hangine there and it would be a much longer plug with many contacts for teh 016 AMM vs the squarere plug for the hot film mass meter used for LH 3, but you would have to have seen both to know how easy they are to differentiate.

Jetronic 2.4 or 3.1 200

Not too sure with the jetronic stuff, but i'd assume that was 2.4 for the four-cylinder, or 3.1 for the six-cylinder. That's the only reference to 2.4 and 3.1 that would make sense to me. Maybe someone here can verify that.....

Jetronic 2.4 or 3.1 200

Duh!!! I never thought about it being the engine size. The manual I have refers to "jetronic version 2.4" and "jetronic version 3.1" as if it was a software revision in the ECU. So is it safe to assume that if I have a B230F it is the same as "jetronic 2.4"??

A parts guy told me that this car could have, and I quote, "one of serveral ECU's and MAS Meter's". Were there "several" for an '89 240 or was he blowing smoke up my bXXX? I get a bit confused because the manuals cover so many models and I'm too cheap to by the factory manual. Can anyone give me the part number for the ECU and MAS Meter??

Thanks a bunch,
Tony

It's 2.4 200

According to the Bentley 240 manual (THE one manual you should get), you have the 2.4.

The only 240s with LH 3.1 are certain '90 thru '93s (Federal, not California), with "82" as the 5th and 6th characters in the VIN.

Hey, sorry about that engine size thing, thought that might be right, but guess not. I'll try to keep my mouth shut now.

Your car should have the 2.4 system. It has nothing to do with engine size, the numbers are a reference to the particular system, and to the generation within that system.
