engine 1800

What is the best engine powerwise/ sizewise to really make the 1800 fly? I am restoring a 68 and would like to really up the HP and performance, more than my dad's stock restored 72.

Has anyone heard of putting a ford 9 inch rear in the 1800, I have heard that it's been done to the 240. What are the advantages difficulties associated with this process?

Thanks,
Jon

Depends on your budget. $1500 can get you some; $5000 can get you a lot more.

A supercharger fits between the numbers above and will completely rock your world.

Power/size, the best would be something other than a Volvo engine (ie...small block American V8), but that's too much work. Best be would be to find a fuel injected B20 from either '70 or '71. Them were the most powerful from stock, and should be quicker than your dad's car. And if you do a little aftermarket stuff, you'll be able to blow his doors off.

Your '68 should have a Dana 30 rear end. Plenty strong enough to stand up to even a race prepped B20. I wouldn't mess with it.

      engine - rearend 1800

      On the rearend:

The 68 has a Dana 30 but still has the same weak point as the 27, the taper with keyway for the drum brakes. Not at all wise to expose to race or racelike stress if you want to keep all 4 wheels on the car. The swap to do if you want to upgrade is the disc brake rearendfrom an 1800E or ES. The axle shafts are as strong as in a Ford 9" and it is a bolt in in a 68. Different wheel bolt pattern but that is easily fixed by machine shop.
