Trunk Struts vs 2 Iron 900

Need my club back in the bag where it belongs.

Need confirmation and possible direction from the experts...

My ride: 1995 960 Wagon

Previous posts have mentioned replacing the ball mounts at the same time. Does this make the procedure any more or less difficult?

Would you recomend buying the parts from Volvo or are there aftermarkets that work as well.

Any problems that I should wath out for.

As always...Thanks

I replaced the struts in my wife's 1991 740 wagon about a year ago. I found struts at the local parts store (Kragen or Pep Bros, can't remember). They were the same brand as was already istalled (stamped in small letters on body of strut). About $20. Don't remember details of install but it was pretty easy. Sure beats getting hit in the head! Good luck , Bob

Bob...I'll take a look at local suppliers on my way home. BAP / NAPA and Pep Boys are all close buy...Thanks

All good recommendations, but be aware that there are, of course, cheap struts that won't last very long. Looks like the local option is very viable given the name stamp. I know the Groton product is also good and from Germany, as I recall.

John...I agree...The parts costs are negligible... I'll pick from the most recomended... Thanks

If the parts cost is a negligible issue, as opposed to a cost difference among aftermarkets, then I'd frankly go with a Volvo lift. Try the recommened online Volvo dealers or OEM parts seller, names of which fail be at the moment. My OEM is at 106K and is just now beginning to fail. The better ones also have a '2-stage' operation, where is it raise the gate quickly about 3/4 of the way and then slowly continues at the upper stroke, ending softly at the top.

I just replaced my struts. Don't see a reason to replace the balls unless they are worn. Mine weren't. Aftermarket are OK, but some are not as attractive as the OEM version. I agree with Shatz, buy online rather than from a dealer. A little shot of silicone spray on the balls will reduce any squeaks.

Mike... I'm looking at local suppliers just for those reasons. I can't tell on the internet sites how the struts match up ...aesthetically...Groton seems to be the most recomended internet provider. I'll use them if I wind up ordering online.

Once you take the clips off...how does the strut come off?

      Thanks...

      Chuck

        Chuck:
Once you take the clips off they just pull off of the balls. It takes a little more force than you think it would at first.

I forget who I bought mine from. They had the generic fit ones, which are scantch, I think, and they work on 900/700 wagons, which have a plain looking silver socket for the ball. Work fine, but nowhere near as nice as OEM. One of the parts dealers had a picture of the correct one, it had the black plastic mounting socket. Its just like the original.

          Mike -

Thanks...I didn't know if there was a pin or set screw I couldn't see. I'm holding out for replacements that are all black.

FCP Groton will supply you with the proper lifts. But then I've never been able to hit a 2 iron.

John...The two iron is for "snake control' when not used to prop the tailgate...I checked out Groton and will use them if I can't find a match at BAP / NAPA.

      Thanks...

      Chuck
