be nice to know what year car. harness problems can be the issue. you need a voltmeter that can read both 1 amp and 10 amps. uplug the neg cable from the battery. with the meter set up for 10 amps, put the red lead on the battery neg and the blk lead on the neg cable. do not turn the key on at any time, you'll blow the fuse in the meter. is there a reading on the meter more 1 amp? that's a big short someplace. hopefully, it'll read 0 amps or less than 1 amp. if so, turn the meter to 1 amp. meter read higher than .1 amp? go to the fuse box; opening the door will turn on the dome light but won't hurt the meter. close the switch for the door and look at the meter. if you show more than .1 amps, pull each fuse 1 at a time. look at the meter each time. when the meter drops, that's the circuit. install the fuse, then pull the wires off, 1 at a time. make sure the wires you are pulling are on the outlet side of the fuse. again, when the meter drops, that's the wire. leave it off. unhook the meter and rehook the battery. everything on the fuse door for that fuse, turn on. what doesn't work is the system you need to look at. if playing in the fuse box doesn't pan out, go to the alternator and disconect it from the car, after unplugging the meter from the battery. rehook the meter, meter drops, replace the alternator. no meter drop-post again and we'll go from there. good luck
