possible causes for draining a 245 battery 200

Hello,
My battery is being drained overnight.
I've been through 2 brand new batteries over the last 3 weeks. I've ruled out an alternator problem because the car will run all day and all night after a jump start.
The problem is something is draining the battery while it sits for more than 5 hours.
I've checked all of the obvoius light switches and I can't find the root of the problem.
If someone would suggest a list of possible items that could be left on when the car is off, I would be very grateful.
Thanks

be nice to know what year car. harness problems can be the issue. you need a voltmeter that can read both 1 amp and 10 amps. uplug the neg cable from the battery. with the meter set up for 10 amps, put the red lead on the battery neg and the blk lead on the neg cable. do not turn the key on at any time, you'll blow the fuse in the meter. is there a reading on the meter more 1 amp? that's a big short someplace. hopefully, it'll read 0 amps or less than 1 amp. if so, turn the meter to 1 amp. meter read higher than .1 amp? go to the fuse box; opening the door will turn on the dome light but won't hurt the meter. close the switch for the door and look at the meter. if you show more than .1 amps, pull each fuse 1 at a time. look at the meter each time. when the meter drops, that's the circuit. install the fuse, then pull the wires off, 1 at a time. make sure the wires you are pulling are on the outlet side of the fuse. again, when the meter drops, that's the wire. leave it off. unhook the meter and rehook the battery. everything on the fuse door for that fuse, turn on. what doesn't work is the system you need to look at. if playing in the fuse box doesn't pan out, go to the alternator and disconect it from the car, after unplugging the meter from the battery. rehook the meter, meter drops, replace the alternator. no meter drop-post again and we'll go from there. good luck

    Trunk light?

Does your car have central locking system (by unlocking driver's door, all others are unlocked at the same time)?? I have had one (there are two behind the dash) of the relays for this system go bad and stay in the "on" position. Drained my battery overnight... Just a thought.

Your welcome, glad you found the problem!! Weren't they fun to get to?

You are welcome. 18 months ago I didn't know didly about these cars, after spending alot of time learning, it's nice to actually teach others who are having similar/same problems that I experienced. This site has saved me alot of money with my cars...in fact, if it weren't for this board I don't think I would own old Volvos. Another 5-10 years down the road, I hope to be the next Don Foster/Art Benstein/Chris Herbst/Aye Roll on this board.

Now that I think of it, I haven't made my yearly contribution to Jarrod this year...I'll put in on my list of things to do.

        Take care,

thanks for getting back to me
I have an 1989 245 with power locks.
the central locking system stopped working a few weeks ago... might be related
Where specifically are these relays located? And what will a malfunctioning relay look like?
      Thanks

      thanks for the guidance.
      specifically,
what cables should I check first?
what connections often go dirty and cause this?
i look under the hood and there are many cables that could be loose and many connections that are dirty. Some will impact the battery more than others, right?
      Thanks again for the response.

Battery cables, check for corrosion at ends, and loose attaching points. Disconnect cables from battery anc clean the ends ( with wire brush, baking soda and water mix, coca cola etc) also chech the connections at the starter and the connections on the alternator. Check all ground straps between engine and frame ans clean them all.
This is good standard maintnence anyway , and will eliminate that variable.
I always use conductive grease on all of the connections after cleaning, but this is not necisary.
