My 740 turbo wagon craps out at 3000rpm and I have to restart engine? 700 1987

could anyone tell me what is going on. I call it crap mode. it acceleration is like 0 to 15 in five seconds. it dosent even feel like the turbo is working. It craps out if I idle to long when the car is cold. if the engine reaches 3000rpm in any gear it craps out. the only to have the engine run normal again is to turn off the car and turn it back on. if any one has any info plerase help. thank you.

Sounds like you have a turbo hose failing on you, i have had them blow and do those kinda things, i have also had them collapse onto themselfs when in turbo mode or very near it. check your hoses.

I'm not a volvo guy... and you didn't say whether your car ran like this ALL the time or only after exceeding a certain RPM...

My girlfriend had a 91 740 with a problem like that, and it turns out the foam in the top of the airbox had been breaking off in chunks and was wedged into the screen protecting MAF sensor. That additional airway restriction would cause the flexible intake hose to the turbo to collapse at higher RPMs. Once that happened, the intake was entirely choked off, and the throttle plate was no longer the restrictor, so it really had no effect until you closed the throttle, let the vacuum that was sucking the hose closed go away and the rubber tube would open back up so you could go again.

Removing all that foam fixed it for us...

BUT ... I don't think the '87 has a MAF sensor... Something to check, though.

Also, if your car remains in crap mode until you shut it down and only enters the mode after getting over 3000 rpms, you can easily lift the hood and look for collapsed intake hoses while it's still running...
