How do you remove the torque converter from the flywheel?(AW70) 200 1985

Hello Brickers.

I found a low mileage AW70 in a Pick and Pull yard last week and removed it but I ran into a slight problem.

How do you remove the torque converter?

I can't find this information in any of my manuals and it really has me puzzled.
I laid there for fifteen minutes trying to figure it out.

I ended up leaving it there and I am going to use my old one but I would like to install it before putting the trans in.

Would it be easiest to just leave it attached to the flywheel and just be careful not to damage the front seal in the trans.? (I plan on replacing the front seal)

It really seems odd. I have never seen this type of setup before.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Kyle,

Check around for opinions on matching the converter. I have been told that it is not a good idea to mismatch converters. In other words, the converter left at the yard should go with the tranny you yanked from the yard. My info came from one who has done a lot of mods and rodding.

Thats the info I got, when I was considering replacing my auto with another auto. Just thought I'd pass this on.

If you bolt converter to drive plate you w_i_l_l_ damage seal. Always fit new seal and fit to box first, making sure you rotate converter to engage all lugs and get it right home. Then offer up box and converter as one unit, you can then bolt converter through drive plate. Nothing worse than finishing job and then flooding garage floor with fluid.

Kyle, if you're into pulling trannies and such, you need to get better manuals (even the Blue cover Haynes addresses your question.) Sure, you know now, but think how good it would have been to know when you walked into the yard.

IMO, the Bentley manual is the one to have. Mine is dog-eared from 13 years of use. The Haynes is like new.
The Bentley is/was $30 at eeuroparts. Spend $9 more and shipping is free.

Four bolts fasten the torque convertor to the drive plate. If you remove the aluminum bracket which mounts to the bottom of the engine (and is in front of the transmission), you will see them. Usually they aren't too tight. 14mm, I think.

I didn't see any aluminum bracket or bolts and I know I looked pretty hard.

I guess I'll have the opportunity to see it when I take the existing trans out.

Thanks.

Can you see the four holes in the attached picture of a B230 drive plate? The bolts go through those holes, from the front side of the engine.

the bolts go into the converter from the ENGINE side of the flywheel, you have to rotate the flywheel to do each one.
